Frequently Asked Questions
- What is "planned giving?"
Planned giving involves providing for a future gift to the University through your financial and estate plans. MSU welcomes gifts made through different planned giving arrangements and will work with you and your financial advisor to help you design the gift that is most beneficial to you.
- Why should I make a planned gift?
Often, individuals and couples can make their most impactful gifts through their estate plans. Including MSU in your will or other estate plan can provide ongoing support for an area that you currently support or create a new gift that can establish your legacy at MSU and help you accomplish your personal goals.
Planned gifts can provide you and your family with a variety of benefits, including:
- Reducing income and/or estate taxes.
- Reducing or avoiding capital-gain taxes.
- Increasing current income for you or others.
- Passing assets on to family members at reduced tax costs.
- Making a transformational gift to MSU.
- What is the easiest way to leave a gift to MSU?
The most common ways to make an estate gift are:
- Remembering MSU in your will.
- Naming MSU a beneficiary in your retirement account, insurance policy, or a donor-advised fund.
- Naming MSU as a beneficiary of your savings or checking accounts.
As with any decision involving your assets, we encourage you to seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor when considering a gift to MSU. We would be happy to assist you and your advisor in identifying the best vehicle to meet your philanthropic and financial goals.
- Can I create a named fund with an estate gift?
Yes. Gifts that meet the minimums outlined in the University’s naming policies are eligible to create named funds and endowments for scholarships, programs, or other areas of interest to you that meet the University’s needs. We can work with you to create a gift agreement now that details the use of your gift in the future.
- Do I notify MSU if I’ve made a planned gift?
You are not required to notify MSU about your intent to leave a bequest, but we ask and hope that you will let us know. Your willingness to be recognized as a supporter of the University will encourage others to follow your lead. Also, it is helpful for the University’s planning purposes to be aware of future gifts and to clarify how you would like the gift to be used.
